How to Delete Discord DMs (And Why There's No Bulk Delete)
The honest answer, and a warning about the tools that promise otherwise

Discord doesn't have a bulk delete for direct messages, and it never has. There's no button anywhere that clears out a DM history in one go, which is genuinely annoying if you've come here hoping for one.
That's the real answer, and most articles on this bury it under a workaround that either doesn't work or will get your account terminated. So let's go through what you can actually do instead.
Closing a DM does not delete it
The X next to a conversation in your DM list only closes it, which means it disappears from your sidebar and nothing else changes.
All of the messages still exist, and the other person still sees the entire history exactly as it was. The moment you reopen the DM, or they send you something new, the whole conversation comes back. This is easily the most common misunderstanding about how Discord DMs work, so if you thought closing was the same as deleting, you're in good company.
Deleting messages one at a time
Hover over the message, click the three dots on the right, then choose Delete. On mobile, long press the message and choose Delete.
You can only ever delete your own messages, so the other person's stay put and there's no way to remove them from a DM. That's deliberate on Discord's part, because a conversation belongs to both people and Discord doesn't let one side quietly rewrite it.
For a short exchange this is perfectly fine, but for a two year friendship it isn't realistic, and no amount of searching is going to turn up a supported tool that fixes that for you.
Why the "DM cleaner" tools are a bad idea
If you search this topic you'll find scripts, browser extensions, and tools that promise to wipe a DM history automatically. Most of them work by logging into your account with your token and deleting messages in a loop.
That is a self-bot, and automating a user account is against Discord's Terms of Service, where the penalty is account termination rather than a warning. On top of that, you'd be handing your account token to a stranger, which gives them full access to everything: every server, every DM, and any payment details attached to the account.
So the risk is losing your account entirely, and the reward is deleting some old messages. That isn't a good trade.
What actually works
Leave the group. In a group DM you can leave the conversation, which removes it from your side permanently.
Block the person. This doesn't delete any history, but it does stop new messages and hides the existing ones from you.
Delete your account. This is the nuclear option. Discord anonymizes your messages when an account is deleted, so your username is replaced with "Deleted User", though the message text itself remains.
Request your data. Under Settings, Privacy and Safety, you can request a copy of your data. That's useful for seeing what exists, even though it doesn't remove anything.
If it's a safety issue
If you're trying to remove messages because someone is harassing you, or because content was shared that shouldn't have been, that's a different problem and it has a different route. Report the messages to Discord's Trust and Safety team directly rather than trying to clean things up by hand, because they can act on the other person's messages and you can't.
Blocking, then reporting, then leaving the conversation is the sequence that actually helps.
